M.I.GOD. is a German band, which released their first album, Bionic, in 2001. They have just recently released their third album, Floor 29.

The album starts off with an atmospheric intro, which soon morphs into a full-blooded metal attack, with slow, huge, doom-like riffs, which prepares you for the things to come. The rest of the album puts a more modern metal spin on things, but we do get occasional flashes of old style metal as well. There are moments when these guys really surprise, like with using some Eastern elements (Terminate, for example). Most of the music leans towards the heavy and modern metal approach, but there are some more sentimental moments, where the guys exhibit that they are at home in gentle waters as well. The ambient keyboard sections often create a feeling of anticipation, which is met by the towering riffs which inevitably follow.

In terms of musicianship, M.I.GOD. prove to be very solid. Some people might complain at the shortage of guitar solos, but they more than make up for it with combinations and ear worms that won’t leave your system soon. One of their biggest assets is the vocalist who excels at just about all the aspects of rock singing – soft ballad parts, occasional growls, screams, clean rock vocals and anything else you can think of. If you can sing Duran Duran’s Ordinary World the way he can, you must be good.

The best way to describe this band would be progressive metal, but I mean that in the truest sense of the word because they’re mixing together stuff that sound really intriguing, exciting, fresh and often new. Don’t expect Dream Theater or anything like that – these guys are actually discovering some new ground, which doesn’t involve the use of a keyboard continuum.

M.I.GOD. is a band which is going places. Floor 29 has it all – the shattering riffs, amazing musicians, strong ideas and amazing execution. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is only the shape of things to come. I get the impression there are great things awaiting this band.

8 out of 10.
